Ovide Les Metamorphoses D'Ovide Traduites En Francois Par P. Duryer Avec Les Explications Sur Toutes Les Fables

Half-Leather. Near Fine. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Text in French. A seventeenth cenury translation of Ovid's ' handbook of ancient mythology, whose deities it was no longer blasphemous to smile at. ' pp. [4] + 984; 15 wood engravings by Nason Chevalier; engraved frontispiece; vignette on title page. Woodcut head and tail pieces appear throughout. Pages are supple and clean, only slightly tanned and with very occasional spots, and have been expertly trimmed and re-sewn by the binder; the new preliminaries are a close match to the text block. The effects of ageing are minimal and do not intrude on the text. The book was expertly re-bound probably in the late nineteenth century in half leather polished brown calf on matching brown marbled boards with contrasting red combed marbled endpapers. A green silk page marker is sewn in. The overall condition of the binding is excellent; the hinges are in fully sound condition. The backstrip has four decorated bands with elaborate bright gilt lattice and floral ornamentation in the spine sections. The title label is red polished calf, lined and with bright gilt titles; the publication date '1678' is impressed in g ilt at the base of the spine. Corners show minimal shelf wear, the spine has no wear. There is no oxidization of the leather. There are no owner names on the preliminaries. On the title page is penned "Gerardi d'Archbold" and two other initials probably handwritten by a seventeenth century owner. "Defantigny" is written over the preface by the same hand; there ar no other marks in the text. This is a lovely book with a fine patina and cachet.
