Three handsome volumes in publisher's half morocco on finely grained marbled boards.Vol. 1, Introduction, Nymphalidae, pp. i-xiv, 1-766 , color lithograph frontis. Vol. 2, Lycaenidae, Papilionidae, Hesperidae, pp. i-x, 767-1774, monochrome lithograph frontis. Vol. 3, Appendix, Plates, pp. i-vi, 1775-1958, monochrome lithograph frontis, 89 lithographed plates (21 of full color butterflies, eggs, etc; 15 of 2 color maps), 2 folding maps (1 colored) and 1 full page colored map.23 chromolithographic plates (including three frontis. portraits), plus numerous other illustrations and three folding maps (two colored). The work illustrates the evolution of illustration technology, with finely executed chromolithographs by Thomas Sinclair and Julius Bien of Philadelphia, as well as more precise images in black and white using gelatin process photographs, photogravures, and electrotypes. All joints and hinges sturdy and firm. Text blocks all complete and tightly bopund-in. Faults include: minimal scuffing at basal edges and at spine extremities consistent with careful shelving; two frontal endpages drifing and lightly re-attached using small amount of reversible adhesive; owner bookplates on pastedowns of all 3 volumes. No other owner names or marks. A very attractive uniformly presented set.
