Portrait frontispiece (with light edge foxing), of the author, a journalist and war correspondent for "The Times", well-known for his reporting of the Crimean War that was recognised for inspiring Florence Nightingale and others to improve coditions for the soldiers at the front. 13 plates and maps (several large folding), three maps with minor closed tears, vi + (2) + 629 + (1)pp., contemporary half calf gilt, sides lightly rubbed, joints and hinges sound in a tight and square original binding half in smooth calf on pebbled red cloth; original red title label with lined edges and bright gilt title. Owner names, both contemporary and more recent on title and ffep.
