Cervantes/ Edward Ward (Trans.) The Life and Notable Adventures of That Renown'd Knight Don Quixote de la Mancha in Two Volumes London Printed for T. Norris et al. 1711 First Edition Full-Leather Fine Antique Condition "Printed for T. Norris at the Looking Glass and A. Bettesworth at the Red Lyon on London-Bridge; J. Harding at the upper-end of St. Martin's Lane; and Sold by J. Woodward in Scalding-Alley, over against Stocks-Market. M DCC XI." Rare first printing of Ward's rendition "Merrily Translated into Hudibrastick Verse." Engraved Frontis. by M.V. de Gucht with captioned verse: " Whilst (Samuel) Butler in Immortal Glory sits/Enthron'd, as King of Poets and of Wits;/ Ward seeks not to usurp his Endless Fame,/ But Courts his Genius to revive his Name." From the personal library of a private collector; two volumes in contemporary polished calf boards with decorative lines and flourishes, and with new title labels expertly matched to the covers by a professional binder. Hinges and joints are sound; edges and corners are unworn and only lightly bumped. The text blocks are leaved in supple, sturdy laid paper, lightly age-toned but not foxed, and without notes or other faults. Volume One: pp. 475 (2) Table of Contents; (2) printers' advertisements. Volume Two: pp. 477 (3) printers' advertisements. Translator Edward Ward (1667-1731) produced a range of satires, character studies, and contributions to the religious and political debates of his time, including, of course this poetic adaptation of Don Quixote. Truly a collector's duo. Price:
