"Selected from our cathedrals and churches, for the purpose of bringing together and preserving correct representations of the best historical illustrations extant from the Norman Conquest to the reign of Henry the Eighth. A new edition with large additions by John Hewitt Esq." A work considered to be of national importance; 195 pages, 144 plates and nine vignettes each drawn and etched on heavy ivory bond in a format displaying the effigy in sepia with details and ornamentation finely reproduced in coloured composites. T he book, as a whole, is three quarter bound in red morrocco on marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. Pastedowns and endpapers have prior owners' plates each with impressive heraldic ornamentation.
